Subject: [*] binary-pump-1.02.cpt.hqx
Ever download a file, only to have it appear as a generic binary file?
If you transfer files with unix, IBM, or VAX systems frequently you've
probably experienced this once or twice. Normally, the solution is to
figure out the correct file type, and then use Resedit or some other
utility and manually change the file type and creator.
Binary Pump is a program which looks at file tags or name extensions in order
to convert them to the correct mac file type and creator. This program is very
easy and very quick to use--simply drag and drop and it's so fast you might
wonder if it ran at all! Binary Pump will also work for non-Drag and Drop
System 6.0.7 users.
Binary Pump is also very easy to customize and has several features which
allow the user to extract file tag information.
version 1.02
-- Binary Pump now skips files that are open from another application
-- Separated Creator & Type button into Creator and Type buttons.
-- Binary Pump now updates file icons and type immediately
-- Scan 2 Files alerts users when they choose the same file twice
-- When looking for file name extension, Binary Pump now
scans the string backwards instead of forwards.

Subject: [*] Fund Manager 2.7
This is a program I wrote to keep up with my mutual funds. It keeps
track of a funds performance on a quarterly and yearly basis. It also does
the same for the entire portfolio. An asset allocation model is easily
calculated in which you can get a breakdown of equities, fixed incomes, and
cash. In each of these categories, either the fund or the type of fund is
listed with its allocation, value, and performance. By making this
calculation, it is easy to adjust your portfolio according to the ever
changing market conditions. You can also keep track of yearly contributions
to tax deferred accounts (IRAs and etc.) so you do not over shelter this
money and get an IRS penalty. There are plenty of other neat features so
poke around.

Subject: [*] HP calc! 2.0
Here at long last is the new version of HP calc! (2.0). It's a simulation
of a Hewlett Packard calculator that approximates the functionality of an
HP 15C or 11C. Although the interface hasn't changed that much, the program
went through a complete rewrite, with some bug fixes and many new features.
Here's the short list:
* Color now works in 16 and 32 bit screens.
* You can shrink the calculator and leave it running on the side of the
screen when you don't need it.
* No more "disappearing calculator" -- data is stored in the system folder
where Auto Doubler and Greg's Buttons can't mess things up.
* Calculator won't start up off the screen, so you don't have to worry about
moving it from large screens to small ones.
* STO and RCL now access memory by text names, which you can type in or select
from a scrolling list.
* Cleaned up some interface stuff.
* You can now choose your own key equivelents for the calculator.
Special thanks to all the people who sent in their $10 shareware fee. Make
sure I've got your e-mail address so I can let you know of further updates.

Subject: [*] jetpack.sit.hqx
Jetpack is an arcade action game -- fly through mazes looking for fuel and keys
and avoiding hazards.
>From the Read Me file:
System Requirements:
-- 68020 or better
-- Color Quickdraw
-- 256 colors
-- Sound Manager 3.0 recommended but not required
-- 1.3M memory
Jetpack is 32-bit clean, System 7 compatible, supports required Apple Events,
and is background friendly.
How to Play:
In Jetpack, you control a little blue-suited man wearing a jetpack. The
little man can walk left or right, and can turn on his jetpack to fly upwards.
You must guide your little man through a series of dangerous mazes. Why? I
dunno. My next game will have a qool story.
Anyway, you start each maze at a door, and must walk and fly through the maze
to find a key. Your jetpack uses fuel for thrust, so you must replenish your
fuel supply by picking up fuel pods that are scattered around the maze. Once
you have the key, return to the door and you will travel to the next maze.
Of course, it isn't that easy, since there are things in the maze that can kill
you. There are three kinds of nasties: Guards, Wall Sweepers, and Fireballs.
Guards randomly patrol the centers of the corridors. Wall Sweepers travel
along the walls. Fireballs bounce around off the walls. Touch any of these
and you're dead. No, you don't have any weapons. Just avoid the nasties, get
the fuel and the key, and get out.
Shareware:
Jetpack is shareware -- it may be freely distributed, but not for profit.
Please register your copy by sending me a check for $10 and a 1.44MB disk.
When you register I will send the disk back with a copy of the level editor and
some other level files. If you prefer, I can e-mail them to you instead if you
have an account on the internet. If you register, all bugfixes and updates are
free. If you can't afford $10, or you are filthy rich and want to heavily
support shareware programming, send me what you think the game is worth.

about 1981; not copyright indicated). The recipes are from the "Cold Hors
d'oeuvres," "Hot Hors d'oeuvres," "Entrees," and "Desserts" sections of
the book. Because food recipes make up less than half of the books
content (cocktails, etc. make up the rest), I also included those recipes
>From the "Punches" (7) and "Eggnog" (3) sections. Also in the file as
"recipes" are the texts from "Which Bacardi for What?" and "It all starts
with Bacardi" just to keep with the spirit of the book. They file at the
top and are marked with asterisks. No single drinks (except single
eggnog...try it!) are included. They may be added at a later date if
there is interest.
Included in this binhexed Compact Pro archive are this text and the recipe
file itself. The recipe file may contain some ingredients that aren't in

This is the Now Utilites 4.0.2 Updater!
Now Utilities 4.0.2 is a maintenance release which corrects some
incompatibilities with 3rd-party software released after Now Utilities 4.0.1p.
System 7-Pro users will also find that Super Boomerang's DirectOpen menus now
function with that system.
Note: This updater will only update 4.0.1p to 4.0.2. If you have 4.0, you
will need to update to 4.0.1p first. (The 4.0.1p updater was released in late
1992, and is still available, online as well; if you are not sure of the
version you have, check the Get Info box for Now Toolbox.)

Panel Macintosh
The expanded files available after opening "OptiMem 1.5.4 Update.sea" will
update to v1.5.4, any copy of OptiMem before it, from v1.4.1. The update
process is divided into two parts, one for the OptiMem control panel and
one for the file of optimization parameters, called Size Prefs. This will
allow you to do the two parts separately. In some cases you may wish to use
the Size Prefs Update more than once. In the future we may distribute a
new Size Prefs Update separately. The "Size Prefs Update" program is used to
merge newly distributed optimization parameters into your existing Size Prefs
file so that you may update your active Size Prefs without losing changes or
additions you have made since installing. (The "Size Prefs Update" program can
also be used to install a fresh copy of Size Prefs OR to undo the last update
that you did with this program.)

This popup CDEF is compatible with systems 6.0 and 7.0 and is similar
to the standard popup CDEF supplied with system 7.0 and described in
IM-VI. An additional variation code, popupTypeIn, helps support
type-in popup menus by displaying only the down arrow without the
current selection or title. The application still needs to support the
editable text field for the type-in popup menu. Except for the
popupTypeIn attribute this CDEF should be upwards compatible with the
system 7.0 CDEF. The MDEF is used to draw the current selection, so
that even icons in menus are properly displayed. The only major
feature missing is color support, but this should not be difficult for
someone to add. Full C source for THINK C 5.0.4 is included.

Subject: .GIF Making
Hello,
My paint program, Color-It USED TO be able to save in .GIF format. The
latest version (2.3.2) no longer does this. I have two questions. First,
what is a decent, inexpensive product that I can use to create .GIFs on
the Mac? I run a IIsi with 9Mb of real RAM (20 virtual) and no FPU (I
don't want to buy one just for this either). I am aware of GIFConverter,
but the shareware fee is a bit steep just to convert formats (for $45 I
want a bit more than just file conversion. SuperPaint costs just $20 more
at Academic rates). I would actually like to be able to complete the full
image creation process -- i.e, scanning or painting a new document,
editing the image, maybe adding a few special effects, and saving directly
to .GIF format -- with one application (as I used to be able to do with
Color-It). Yes, I know I could just use my old version of Color-It, but
the new version fixes a few annoying bugs. Money IS an object, but
pretend that it isn't.
Also, I have yet to hear from anyone at MicroFrontier on this, but I
suspect that the reason .GIF support was dropped is the same reason that
WprdPerfect Mac 3.0 no longer imports .GIFs or compressed TIFFs. I called
WP support and was told that "licensing concerns" over the LZW compression
scheme made them drop it. It appears that whatever the LZW owners wanted
was too steep even for a big company like WordPerfect (and surely for a
smaller one like MicroFrontier). Does anyone know about this? Who owns
LZW and why are they suddenly causing problems for simple folk like me who
just wanna have some fun with their software?
Thanks for any help anyone can give on this.

Subject: A Downloading Problem:
I have problems when downloading .hqx files via gopher from the internet by
the Delphi gateway. They seem to arrive at my end just fine, but when
un-binhexing them, nine times out of ten the file will have been corrupted,
usually a damaged data fork. I've used PacerTerm, ZTerm, FreeTerm,
MacIntercom..and still the same sad story. I've tried MacBinary, Binary,
Text settings in ZModem, X and Y Modem. Still, the file comes out looking
ok..no CRC errors...but it is junk when I try to unbinhex using BinHex 4.0,
HQXer 1.1, Stuffit Expander, or DownLine.
I've used every combination of Hardware and Software error protocols. File
compression...no file compression. It's frustrating because I have zero
problems with other online services, GEnie, AOL, or even the Mac Libraries on
Delphi, itself...or any other services... or when sending files back and
forth to friends. I've used four different modems, and different connect
speeds. It's such a pervasive problem that I must be making some simple,
rudimentary error somehow. I have 25 years of programming experience and
hardware design...and my brain *seems* to function. I'm very familiar with
the AT command sets for each modem. Right now I'm using a Global Village
Power-Port Gold 14.4 wonderthing. I'm stumped to the max...can anyone figger
this one out? Or point me in the right direction? Somebody out there with a
Mac, modem, and simple terminal software MUST be getting successful internet
downloads. Where are you? How do I sort this out? Don't force me to call
Delphi Customer Service. Please, not that...

Subject: emacs for the mac (A)
Having Emacs on the Mac has been a Holy Grail of mine for many, many
years. IMHO, the three best options are:
1. "the real thing", i.e., full GNU Emacs, complete with all Lisp
functions and on-line documentation, running under the
MacMiNT "operating system" (which is actually a MultiFinder
compatible Mac application)
2. Mac Jove with a startup file I wrote which makes it more like
GNU Emacs
3. Mac MicroEmacs with a startup file I wrote which makes it more
like GNU Emacs
#1 is definitely the best, but it is not for the faint of heart. It
also requires a LOT of disk and RAM space. If you aren't very
comfortable with UNIX, you should think twice before trying to get
MacMiNT going. MacMiNT is absolutely fantastic (many, many thanks to
Brad Pickering <brad@tazboy.jpl.nasa.gov>, Rick Watson
<rick@akbar.cc.utexas.edu>, and several others), but non-trivial to
install unless you are at least semi-fluent in UNIX. For more info,
send mail to Brad asking him to add you to the mailing list for
alt.mac.os@tazboy.jpl.nasa.gov. Do NOT send the request to the mailing
list itself. A lot of interesting messages about MacMiNT get posted to
it, including ones on installing and using GNU Emacs under MacMiNT.
The next best option is running Jove. I have a startup file I wrote
which set key bindings, etc. to make Jove behave like GNU EMacs as
much as possible. I can send the file to anyone who is interested. You
should be able to get Jove itself from sumex.
Ditto the above for MicroEmacs. However, I like Jove better. Your
mileage may vary.

I have to say in defense of the LineLink that I have not had a bit of
trouble connecting to a variety of server. Likewise, I have had no
problems sending or receiving faxes. My only problem has been connecting
SLIP program.

Subject: MacX problem (A)
A short while ago, I posted about a problem I was having with MacX 1.2.
The problem caused my computer to hang for 45 seconds whenever the client
tried to display any graphical data. I have solved the problem, so I
thought I'd tell you what was wrong.
It seems there was a conflict with the extension InterTCP 1.0.2, which was
installed on the Mac, but not selected as the connection tool for MacX to
use. Even though MacX was using MacTCP, InterTCP's existence caused the
hang. Removal of this extension made MacX function normally.
Thanks to all who gave useful suggestions.

Subject: quadra 840av bus error sol'n
Earlier I reported that the Quadra 840av with a third party video board
and monitor yielded a "bus error" when no monitor was connected to the
built-in video. At that point the Quadra was hung. A short term work-
around was to boot with no extensions (hold down the shift key while
booting).
Apple has shipped us System Enabler 088 v1.1 which appears to have
completely resolved the problem.

Subject: Quadra 840AV crash when sharing disk (Q)
I've got a problem that I'm hoping someone knows the cure for. Our Quadra has
an internal and an external disk. If one logs on over Ethertalk from another
Mac and mounts the disks, they both appear on their desktop, but only the
external disk can be opened. Opening the internal drive causes the 840AV to
immediately crash with a type positive 29 error (I can't find this listed
anywhere;does anyone know what this is?). I'm running Ethertalk 2.5.4,
AppleTalk 58.1 and have tried turning off all Control Panels and Extensions
except those required for File Sharing. I tried making all the AppleShare PDS
files visable with ResEDIT and trashed them so the Mac would rebuild them. I
also ran Norton and rebuilt all the desktops several times. My last choice is
to completely rebuild the System. Short of that, any other advice or
information would be greatly appreciated.

does its job <g>.
Again, thanks to all those who helped me.

VersaTerm and VersaTerm Pro both include this (and are otherwise pretty
cool comm programs in general). Unless you REALLY need Tek 4105 graphics
(most don't), I recommend you don't get the Pro version but instead stick
with the much cheaper plain old VersaTerm (which does have pretty good Tek
4014 emulation). Aside from the extra TEK emulation mode, VT Pro and VT
are identical I believe.
Both can be found at the usual places (MacWarehouse, Mac's Place, etc.).

Yes, indeed, Radiant Enterprises offers weather instrumentation via their
"Common Sense" node, many of which can simultaneously be attached to an
Appletalk network. Connect with Gert Hansson at Radiant Enterprises;

This is not a very helpful criticism; perhaps you could be more
explicit. I use WP 3.0 with the Chinese Language Kit for both simplified
and traditional characters, and it performs very well. It does not, to
be sure, offer vertical plus right-to-left word-wrapping, but this style
is rarely used in modern Chinese. For moderate amounts of vertical,
right-to-left writing I have found that a page-sized, one-row by 20- to
30-column (depending on character size) table works quite well. Yes, you
have to scroll back to the top of the table to begin entry in a new
column, but that is not a significant amount of overhead for someone
like me who uses pinyin input, although it may be for a native writer
adept at using wubi (simplified) or cang jie (traditional) input.
I did encounter one problem at first, but it turned out to be a
side-effect in WP caused by an incompatibility between NowMenus and the
Chinese Language Kit. The superficial indication of the problem, present
even when no wordprocessing application is open, is that the Chinese
keyboard selections in the keyboard menu are labeled with nonsense
characters when NowMenus is turned on. You should not run NowMenus and
the CLK at the same time no matter what word processor you use.
In an earlier post, Alexei complained of difficulty with Russian, but
his complaints about other aspects of WP were so different from my own
experience (and that of many others) that I wonder if may not have a
defective copy. I find it very hard to understand why WP can work well
with Chinese and not with Russian.
